Stick, Twist or Fold
What leadership hand do you choose to play?
Last week’s issue focussed on the theme of reflection, reviewing your year corporate athlete style. *If you’d like to revisit it, click below.
This week, I’m inviting you to think about how you take what you’ve learned with you into the next year.
Because leaders learn through a continuous loop of action and reflection; it is only by applying this insight we gain through reflection that we actually make a difference.
So, with the end of the year only a few days away, and in the spirit of the holidays, I’d like to invite you to play a little game with me.
As Roald Dahl wrote in My Uncle Oswald, life is more fun if you play games, after all.
The Game: Stick, Twist, or Fold
It’s a simple game, with just three questions.
Question 1: In 2023 what do you want to stick with?
Think about what’s working well that you want to continue. What did you experiment with that you want to keep pursuing or developing? Maybe you started switching your mail off in the evening, or perhaps you started stretching your body early in the morning to improve your energy and focus. Write them down.
Question 2: What do you want to twist?
What’s working but would benefit from a change? What needs freshening up or tweaking to make it even more effective? Where does something need changing up to keep you growing and developing in the direction you want? Make a note.
Question 3: What do you want to fold?
Did you start something that hasn’t quite taken off? Or are there behaviours you want to ditch and replace with something new? Quitting something that isn’t working takes courage and it is an opportunity to learn from what hasn’t worked and invest energy where it does. What will that be? Note them down.
Then take a step back and review your answers to the three questions.
What trends and patterns do you notice?
What will be possible if you implement the changes you’ve written?
What are you willing to do to achieve them?
